Quartz is a chemical compound consisting of one part silicon and two parts oxygen. It is the most abundant mineral found on the Earth's surface, and its unique properties make it one of the most useful natural substances.

The pink colour of rose quartz is caused by inclusions of a pink variety of the mineral dumortierite. These inclusions are usually abundant enough to make the rose quartz translucent instead of transparent.

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. After crystallization, gamma rays irradiate the trace amounts of iron in the quartz to produce the purple colour.
